Black Star 2" Crushed Gravel
Black Star 2″ — commonly called “shadow rock” — is our larger-format black landscaping gravel, valued for its dark gray-to-charcoal color and sharp, angular shape. Unlike smooth river rock, crushed gravel’s angular edges lock together under pressure, making Black Star 2″ an excellent choice for both bold decorative landscaping and structural hardscape applications where compaction and stability matter.

SIZE
2 inches
ANGULAR, INTERLOCKING SHAPE
Crushed with sharp, angular edges that lock together under pressure — at 2″, Black Star holds its position especially well in loose or decorative applications, while still compacting effectively for driveway bases, walkways, and sub-base layers.
DURABLE BASALT ORIGIN
Black Star is crushed basalt, a denser and harder-wearing volcanic stone than our limestone products. Quarried and processed to hold up under South Texas heat, heavy rainfall, and repeated vehicle or foot traffic.
COLOR COMPATIBILITY
The dark gray-charcoal “shadow rock” tone creates a bold, modern look against gray, white, and blue home exteriors, and pairs well with concrete, pavers, and contemporary landscape design.
Recommended Uses
Black Star 2″ is a versatile crushed gravel suited for both structural and decorative applications.
- Driveway base and topcoat: Compacts tightly for a stable, low-maintenance driving surface.
- Paver and patio sub-base: Provides drainage and a stable foundation beneath pavers or flagstone.
- Drainage applications: Angular shape allows water to pass through while resisting shifting, ideal for French drains and drainage channels.
- Foundation and shed base material: A common specification for contractors needing compactable structural fill.
- Decorative ground cover: As a black landscaping gravel, the larger size holds its place well in beds, borders, and xeriscaping, where a bold, high-contrast color is desired.
Availablity
Black Star 2″ is a local stone, and is almost always in stock.

How does Delivery work?
Here at the Rock Depot, we try to make the delivery process is designed to be as pain-free as possible.
- Where do you deliver? We typically deliver to your driveway, though special requests can be made and are up to the discretion of the driver.
- Are all drop locations accessible? Most drop locations are accessible unless you order 25 tons or more, which requires an 18-wheeler delivery and may need special access considerations.
- Do I need to be there when they deliver? No, but it is highly recommended that someone be there to direct the driver. Once the material is dropped, not much can be done about it.
- Can you spread the material? Due to the nature of a dump trailer, we aren’t able to spread the material very much. If there is room, we are able to drag drop the material to make the pile more manageable. For comprehensive landscaping, contact Padre Landscapes at (361)-949-6999
- How much material can you haul at a time? For most deliveries, we can haul up to 6 cubic yards at a time. If you purchase 25 tons or more, the delivery will be carried out with an 18-wheeler.
Material Disclaimer
Due to the delivery process, your material may look a different color (usually a lighter color) from the desired look upon dumping. This is due to dust buildup from transferring material. Thoroughly wash the material after installation to achieve the correct look.
How Much Material Do You Need?
One cubic yard usually covers anywhere from 80-120 square feet, depending on thickness.
For larger size materials (3″+), coverage ranges 60-100 square feet.
